Weber 40 IDA on Lester Ewing's car

Lester has sent some more detail photos of the manifold that was made to fit a Weber 40 IDA. Apparently, someone (not Lester) used a SAAB manifold that is rather rare, possibly the rarest of all, and welded a 3/8" plate on it as an adapter to fit the Weber.

Letter from Jim Haynes regarding #4101

Originally posted: 04 December 2010

This is an excerpt from an email conversation I had with Lester about his Quantum Formula S chassis #4101. It describes some of the race history of the car and confirms that it ran as a Formula Junior at one time.

Wait a sec...
I have a letter here from Jim Haynes...
It is addressed to "Randy".
I suppose that is probably Randy Cook.

There's no address or last name.
It is dated 10/21, but no year.
It is on SCCA letterhead.

It reads (typos included):

James E. Haynes
Vice President
Special Projects

You are in luck as I am probably the only person who knows that a Quantum SAAB ran as a Jr. in 1964....I drove the factory car for Hank Rudkin (owner of Quantum) in 1965 and finished 4th in FC at the run offs with only an 850cc engine... attached are 2 pages from the 1964 SPORTSCAR (books are from SCCA lirary and hard to copy) that will solve your problem with SVRA...Lime Rock race was test outing and as far as I know the only F Jr. entry for the car as Jr went out in 1966...

Jim Haynes

The attached results show that he did indeed finish 4th in F Jr. (7th overall) at the "New England Region SCCA National Races, Oct. 17 & Oct. 31, 1964" in the "formulas" race. It looks like a mixture of "FL" (Formula Libre), FJ, and FV.  The first 6 cars in the race were all Lotuses.
